E27 base - features, characteristics, advantages and disadvantages
The type of socket number E27 is one of the most popular options for light bulbs. To learn more about the peculiarities of its operation, you need to study the main parameters, areas of application, advantages and disadvantages.
Where it is used
The size E27 can be safely called a household type of bases. It is the most common due to its operational properties. The popularity has also influenced the availability, the bases of this type are in the range of different companies, and you can buy them in the hardware department of any store.
Scope of application E27:
- Residential premises (private houses, apartments).
- Household premises (garages, basements, closets, etc.).
- Small area factories.
- Low power street lamps.
A large percentage of the light bulbs that people daily encounter in the home, just meet the standard E27. For rooms of large areas already need more powerful lighting fixtures.
Advantages and disadvantages
Choosing lighting scheme for their home, people often decide to use the standard base type E27. And this is not strange, because it has many advantages:
- Popularity. The main "competitor" for E27 today is E14, both sizes are available in almost every store. No need to order a rare kind of light bulb online.
- Price. Massiveness of the product and inexpensive components make it available to everyone. Products with an E27 base are inexpensive.
- Assortment. Incandescent lamps are sold with this socket, LEDhalogen and energy-saving models. Also E27 is available from every manufacturer, so you can choose a lighting fixture by quality and cost.
- Doesn't warp. The Edison base, including size 27, is a very sturdy construction whose shape is not affected by temperature fluctuations or shaking during transportation.
- Power. There are even 300-350W units with this base, which is enough even for a relatively small production.
Disadvantages:
- Possibility of corrosion. If the base begins to rust in the fixture, then it will be difficult to pull it out.
- There are products of low quality. The range of lamps of this size is really large, there are even very low quality models from little-known manufacturers.
When buying a lamp, you need to consider the conditions of its operation, for outdoor use it is better to take special waterproof versions.
The main features of the E27 socket
The E27 socket is really widespread, and has many advantages. But it can be recognized among others, first of all, by its characteristic design and size.
Design
Glass or plastic bulb can have almost any shape, but the base itself - a standard cylinder with a thread cut. It is by means of this thread that it is screwed into the socket luminaire.
The connecting part of the socket is made of metal or ceramic, it has contacts that transmit electricity to the bulb. There are electrodes on the base, they receive this electricity and pass it on to the filaments or the board. An additional element in the design is the stengel, its function is to pump out air.
Dimensions
It is almost impossible to know the size of the connection by the bulb itself. There are models with a small bulb, with a length of 70 and a diameter of 45 mm, and there are large versions for 180 and 80 mm, respectively. Also there may be narrow long lamp or a short wide.
But the base itself has standard dimensions, as indicated by its name. The diameter is 27 mm and the height is just under 26.67 mm.
Marking
In the marking of the product the letter indicates that the device belongs to the Edison inventions, and the number indicates the size (diameter) of the thread. In addition, the light bulb indicates the power in watts (W), the voltage in V (volts) and the luminous flux in lm (lumens). You can also see the manufacturer's marking with an emblem or a name.
Advantage of this type
Compared to most other options, the main advantage of E27 is the prevalence. If the bulb fails, it is easy to find it in stores in the city. Replacement, too, will not be a problem, you just need to turn off the light, unscrew the old bulb on the thread and screw in the new one.
Types of bulbs with E27 base, their features
Lamps differ in the principle of operation and performance characteristics. Each of the types is presented and under the label E27.
Incandescent bulbs
The oldest variant of light bulbs, it is for them and was developed E27 socket, so this size is most often installed in incandescent lamps. As for technical characteristics, the power ranges from 15 to 250 W, and the luminous flux is about 10 Lm/W.
Advantages:
- low price;
- even light;
- not afraid of moisture;
- simple design.
Cons:
- high power consumption;
- short lifetime;
- fragility of the bulb;
- heating.

Halogen
On the principle of operation are similar to incandescent lamps, but additionally in the bulb comes a pair of halogens. This increases the luminous flux, which reaches a value of 17-20 Lm/W. For halogen models, the base marked G is used more often.
Advantages:
- operation at different temperatures;
- not afraid of moisture;
- good and uniform light;
- cost.
Disadvantages:
- stable voltage requirements;
- high power consumption;
- Can only be touched with gloves.
Energy saving
These are Fluorescent lamps that differ in design. They are usually made in a spiral shape along which the mercury vapor moves. It has a high level of luminous flux - up to 70 Lm/W.
Pros:
- Lifetime of use;
- economical electricity consumption;
- bright light.
Cons:
- Special disposal requirements;
- operates with mercury vapor;
- After switching on, takes some time to heat up;
- do not work well at low temperatures;
- high cost.
LED .
A modern version of light bulbs with a high light output of up to 120 Lm/W and a long service life. The maximum life of a conventional LED bulb under good operating conditions is 50,000 hours.
Pros:
- have different color temperatures;
- work even if the bulb is damaged;
- energy efficiency;
- operation in difficult conditions.
Cons:
- Stable voltage requirements;
- high price;
- gradual decrease in brightness.

In which lighting fixtures are used
Lamps with an E27 base are used for household and industrial lighting. They are suitable for table, wall and pendant luminaires. E14 size is also used in lighting fixtures of low and medium power including different types of lamps and wall lamps. For high-power outdoor lighting E40 lamps are used for high-power outdoor lighting up to 2000 W.
Compatibility with other sizes
The connection of the base allows you to replace the part or make repairs if necessary. Directly this variant is not compatible with others, but the problem can be solved by using special adapters.
Using socket adapters
When a lamp has to be plugged into a socket which was not designed for it, you can use special adapters. They simply allow you to change, for example, from size E14 to E27 without loss of power or any other qualities.
But the disadvantage is also a lengthening of the design, which is not always convenient. If the bulb protrudes strongly from the plafond, it negatively affects the appearance of the lamp, and also increases the risk that the bulb can accidentally be hit and broken. Therefore, the use of adapters is not always advisable.
As for the range of adapters, there is no problem here. They are available in a range in stores of lighting equipment, as well as the desired adapter can be ordered online. Adapters are made by Cosmos, OBI, Lemanso, E.Next and dozens of others. There are even models for combining different types of bases, such as G9 to E27 or vice versa. Double-type models are available, two lamp sockets can come out of one input at once. The cost starts from a dozen rubles and can go up to several hundred.
